School Camp Catering Victoria: What to Look for in a Provider
A buyer's guide for Victorian schools choosing a camp catering provider — what to ask, what to compare, and the red flags that should rule a caterer out.

Specialisation matters more than scale
A general events caterer who does camps occasionally is not the same as a specialist who does this every week. Camp catering is a specific discipline — non-commercial kitchens, large mixed-age groups, complex dietary mixes, remote venues — and the best providers in Victoria are the ones that have built their entire operation around it.
Ask any prospective caterer how many school camps they have catered for in the past 12 months. The answer should be a specific number, not a vague "lots".
Dietary capability is the single biggest differentiator
Anyone can put out food. Putting out safe, inclusive food for a group with 8 different dietary requirements is a different skill entirely. Ask: how do you handle gluten-free in a non-commercial kitchen? How do you avoid cross-contact for nut allergies? Do you provide written dietary cards for every meal?
A confident, specific answer here is a strong signal. Hand-waving is a red flag.
Recipe cards and on-site support
For supply-and-support models — the most common for Victorian school camps — the quality of the recipe cards matters enormously. Ask to see a sample. Are the steps written for non-chefs? Are timings included? Are allergens flagged? Is there a phone number for live support during camp?
Logistics and reach
Confirm the caterer can reliably deliver to your venue. Camps at Licola, Phillip Island, the Otways or High Country require different logistics than a metro venue. Ask how often they have delivered to your specific camp or area.
Pricing transparency
A good camp caterer will quote per-student per-day, with a clear breakdown of what is included (ingredients, packaging, dietary cards, delivery) and what is extra (chef on-site, special equipment, last-minute additions). Be cautious of unusually low quotes — they often reveal compromises in quality, dietary support or portion size.
Red flags
Reluctance to share references. No clear dietary process. No recipe cards or written documentation. Surprise charges after the camp. Slow communication during the lead-up. Any of these should rule a provider out.
Quick FAQ
- How do I compare school camp catering providers in Victoria?
- Compare on five criteria: specialisation in school camps (not general events), proven dietary management process, quality of recipe cards and on-site support, delivery reliability to your venue, and transparent per-student per-day pricing.
